The WHO and ILO report that nearly one-third of non-melanoma skin cancer deaths are due to working outdoors under the sun. In 2019, 1.6 billion workers were exposed to harmful solar ultraviolet radiation, leading to almost 19,000 deaths worldwide. The majority of these were men. The report emphasizes the need for protective measures against UV exposure at work to prevent skin cancer, recommending actions like providing shade, changing work hours, and using protective clothing and sunscreen. This issue has been identified as a significant occupational hazard requiring urgent attention.
